Ian Curtis ' death prompted a flood of bootlegs and similar "tributes," likely motivated more by profit than anything else. Seeking to trump this problem -- though arguably coming from much the same standpoint -- Factory issued Still ina haphazard if still useful collection of odds, ends, and more. Considering that the band's many singles weren't properly compiled until much later on SubstanceStill makes only partial sense -- the studio cuts were mostly outtakes, while the live songs had their own problems.

Beyond that, things were more hit and miss, with strong instrumental Passover - Joy Division - Still given to slightly indifferent songs and vice versa. The anthemic "Something Must Break" is one of Massive Treasure - Lucian Parrot - Parrots Outa Mind best, while the nervous "Ice Age" is an agreeable enough thrash and "The Only Mistake" a melodramatic but still effective effort.

Other numbers like "The Sound of Music" and the heavily compressed pound of "Walked in Line" sound more like sketches on the way to becoming truly great songs. A live Passover - Joy Division - Still concludes the studio half, a fair enough take on the Velvet Underground 's "Sister Ray" at under half the length which concludes with Curtis ' wry joke, "You should hear our version of 'Louie, Louie'!

A fierce, invigorating rip through "Ceremony," formally recorded later as New Order 's first single, suffers from Curtis ' vocal going missing at the start, while the remainder of the show finds the singer either too detached or too harsh, the other musicians doing an OK but not great job themselves.

  1. Both CDs are held in a gate fold cardboard digipak which in turn is held in a firm plastic sleeve sporting Collector's Edition at the bottom. The plastic sleeve features a bar code sticker which reads: "Re-mastered studio album with bonus disc of a previously unreleased live .
  2. This Joy Division collection is the one recording with a kick-ass version of "The Kill. " This track is the reason I purchased Still. This version of "The Kill" is completely different from "The Kill" off of the Warsaw LP. Other great tracks include "Ice Age" and "Walked In Line/5(9).
  3. Oct 23,  · Category Music; Song Passover (Live at Birmingham University) [ Remaster] Artist Joy Division; Album Still (Re-mastered Re-issues).
  4. When writing about Joy Division you enter the territory marked ‘sacred cows’. It’s the same box that contains Nirvana or Hendrix. So how do you approach a collection that has so much.
  5. I had 3 Joy Division CDs when I bought this, but I still wasn't too into them. This changed all that. The first 10 songs are rarities and the last 10 are from a recorded concert - the last show they played before Ian Curtis killed himself, I think.
  6. Still is a compilation album by Joy Division, consisting of previously released and unreleased studio material and a live recording of Joy Division’s last concert, performed at Birmingham.
  7. From a live performance point, however, Joy Division are at best serving mere purpose of documentary evidence; those witnessing the energy and the charisma in the flesh may be right insisting on the unforgettable experience for all the right (or wrong) reasons, but from a level of just listening to it on record, Sumner and Hook's playing.
